He wrote down many points whereas it used to be driving, and that i should admit this alerted Pine Tree State to some unhealthy driving habits i could have picked up over the years.
We were recently invited by Road Cover to attend a day of Defensive Driving at BMW and as we drove into town the driver instructor asked us to do a “running commentary” on seeing and identifying all the hazards on the road.
He wrote down several points while I was driving, and I must admit this alerted me to some bad driving habits I may have picked up over the years.
·        How would you describe or outline what's a “Bad Driving Habit”?
It's any driving technique which is illegal or not in line with international best practice.
Something one will that doesn't “gel” with what a defensive driver usually practices.
It is any regular activity which will and can hurt your safety once driving. Most of the time these habits are present without the driver even knowing about them.
A bad driving habit can be defined as any driving practice that is inherently unsafe, increases fuel consumption and/or places greater strain on a vehicle’s components leading to greater operational costs.
Most of the everyday unhealthy driving habits arise from disobeying the law. Examples of such lawlessness (illegal driving in one way or another) include rolling through stop streets, not stopping at traffic lights and speeding.
·        Are unhealthy driving habits “illegal” or just poor driving?
It is important to recognize that most crashes are the result of illegal, thoughtless and reckless driving.
There square measure a vanishingly little variety of unhealthy driving habits that don't seem to be truly amerceable.
Crashes caused by illegal actions are rare and improbable and since most drivers routinely display dozens of bad habits which break at least one traffic law, they should receive more of our attention.
For example, inadequate following distance is the direct cause of 30% of South Africa's crashes and is indirectly implicated in another 10%, including some head-on crashes and same-direction crashes which have a lack-of-visibility aspect.
But it's illegal to follow too closely! One of the 18 general duties of the driver (which every motorist is required to know prior to sitting the Learner's License Test) says that a driver: "...may not follow another vehicle additional closely than is affordable or prudent..." (NRTA Reg 308 1(b)).
·        Is it honest to mention that unhealthy habits begin even before beginning the ignition by incorrect positioning of the seat? What are the bad habits we display when sitting behind the wheel?
Most drivers tend to forget that the Rules of the Road also include stipulations as to the position behind the steering wheel.
Note the general duties of the driver which stipulate that a driver may not: "...occupy such a position that he or she does not have complete control over the vehicle or doesn't have a full read of the road and therefore the traffic previous such vehicle..." (Reg 308 1(c).
It is up to each driver to ensure they comply with the legal requirement, and they should be able to if they were paying attention while learning for their Learner's License Test.

An incorrect mindset is probably the biggest failing in before you step into the vehicle.
Break a Habit

Do you bite your nails? Chew on your hair? Suck your thumb? Pick your lips? Regardless of your explicit habit, or however deeply deep-rooted it's, the method of breaking it'll be similar. With persistence and therefore the right outlook, it's potential to interrupt your unhealthy habits, and these directions assist you through the method of doing this.
v Changing your Thinking
1.Commit to a goal.
Although it's going to appear obvious, it is important to understand that the first step in breaking a bad habit is developing a true desire for and committing to changing your life.
Many people start up the trail of breaking a habit while not being sure that they really need to alter. Breaking habits may be a troublesome task, so if you aren't fully committed to it you are likely to fail.
2.Understand your habit.
Most habitual behaviors area unit patterns that have evolved as a result of they need been rewarded in how. They make it easier to perform a typical task, or to deal with various emotional states.
A “habit loop” forms from a cue, or trigger, that tells your brain to start the habitual behavior. The brain processes a “reward” from this behavior, in the form of neurochemicals, that reinforces the habit loop. Interrupting the behavior, a part of this loop is a way to break a habit.
3.Examine the context of your habit.
To determine the most effective way to break a habit, it will be helpful to determine the situational and emotional context that triggers the habit This can help you understand what “rewards” your brain is looking for. Having this understanding can enable you to develop different, healthier means of achieving the same rewards that the bad habit provided.
Many dangerous habits happen as a way of coping with things that cause stress or tedium.
For example, for many people smoking provides a relief from stress. Procrastination quickly provides free time to have interaction in additional fun activities.
When you feel the urge to perform your habitual behavior, make a note of it. Often, habits became thus deep-rooted that we tend to don’t even notice why we tend to do them. Developing that awareness will help you pinpoint what is going on to prompt your habit.
When you create your note, jot down what was going on at the time. For example, if you’re a nail-biter, note whenever you feel the impulse to bite your nails. Take a few notes about how you’re feeling, what has been going on during the day, where you are, and what you were thinking.
4.Make a plan.
Once you perceive things that triggers your habit and therefore the reward you receive for participating within the undesirable behavior, you can make a plan that involves goals for behavior change and strategies for minimizing habit triggers.
Studies show that having a clear, specific plan greatly increases your chances of success in breaking habit. It helps break down unwanted behaviors and conjointly helps produce new patterns of action.
Plan to make mistakes. Do not create an idea which will be deemed a failure as a result of one slip. Most people concede to the temptation of previous habits at some purpose whereas making an attempt to interrupt them. If you settle for this beforehand, you will be less likely to let negative thinking defeat the whole enterprise of breaking the habit.
You should include in your plan mechanisms for keeping yourself accountable, in the form of rewards for successes and feedback from others who support your goal of breaking the habit. You are a lot of probably to reach your goal if you share it with others. More details on this area unit provided later during this article.
5.Visualize success.
In your mind, repeatedly apply breaking the habit by imagining situations during which you interact in desired behaviors instead of the unhealthy habit. Imagine things during which you'd be tempted to engage within the unsought behavior and opt for a far better possibility. This helps reinforce positive behavior patterns.
For example, if your goal is to eat less junk food, imagining yourself in your kitchen preparing a healthy meal, and sitting down to eat it.

Some people find it helpful to write down "scripts" of their desired behavior and read them every day.
5 Steps to Breaking Bad Habits

1. Decide that you simply actually need to vary and persuade yourself that you simply will.
You can only change what you decide you want to change. All psychological models of change emphasize the importance of commitment as a necessary first step. If you don't see a problem, you won't work on changing your behavior. The more honest you are with yourself about the nature of your bad habit, the more likely you will be to start on the path toward change. You might want to start by keeping a log of your bad habits- how often you've been late, overeaten, smoked, lied, or drank to excess, for example. To help motivate yourself, a frank conversation with the people closest to you may prove valuable. People who care about you can give you the mirror you need to see your problematic behaviors for what they are.
Once you've decided you want to change, convince yourself that you are able to achieve your change goals. You need to strengthen your sense of self-efficacy, or belief that you can accomplish what you want. Seeing other people change successfully is inspiring, but you need to see yourself as having what it takes to make those changes in yourself. As you go through Steps 2-4, you'll build your self-efficacy and become even more likely to succeed.
2. Gain insight on what's causing the habit.
Once you figure out your inner motives and the external incentives that are driving your bad habits, you'll go a long way toward changing them.
Take an honest onerous cross-check the things that lead you to commit your dangerous habit. If it's lateness, as Galanos suggested, you may be trying to control the lives of others by setting the times that you (not they) want to meet. It's also possible that your behavior is motivated by a kind of self-defeating need to undo yourself, or what psychoanalysts might call "neurotic behavior." Do you unconsciously try to thwart your own success because you don't feel you deserve to do well in life? Do you fail to engage in good health habits because you don't think your body deserves to be treated properly? Are your addictions perhaps motivated in part by some need that you have to fail or shorten your life?
These sorts of inner motivations may interact with influences that are acquired through specific experiences. Everyone responds to reinforcements-- the rewards that strengthen our behaviors. Some dangerous habits simply feel smart, so we keep repeating them. They may also make our other problems, such as stress, temporarily go away, and this relief becomes another source of reinforcement. Social rewards add to the mix. If your friends don't complain when you're late, act in overbearing ways, or commit social improprieties, you don't see any real reason to change. In fact, the behavior of people would possibly keep your dangerous habits going. You're late to a meeting, and everyone rushes to fill you in on what you missed. Now you've gotten some attention for your movie-star like dramatic entrance.
3. Set reasonable goals at first
Your dangerous habits have taken years to ascertain themselves. You're not going to throw them off in an instant. Decide on a realistic schedule that will work for you based on goals that you believe you can meet. Overcoming your sedentary lifestyle is a good example of how you can proceed through this step. In the first place, don't think that you can readily go from zero days of exercise a week to seven. You'll be bound to fail and then use your failure as proof that you can't change. Instead, work out a schedule of times to go to the gym or on a run that will readily fit into your existing schedule. Start off slow (two or three times a week), and gradually increase until you're at the level recommended for your age, gender, and family history.
When it comes to a social behavior such as being chronically tardy, your ultimate goal of never being late may also be hard to achieve in one step. If you're typically running 20 or 30 minutes late for your appointments, set a preliminary goal of "only" being 10 minutes late (still annoying to other people but not quite as much). It's unlikely you can change completely right away if this is an ingrained habit reinforced by others and caused by some self-defeating tendencies. Cutting the tardiness factor by half is a good start.
4. Measure your progress and don't be discouraged by occasional slips
If you're going to reach your ultimate goal, you'll need to know how well you're doing on achieving the reasonable goals you've set as first steps. This means that you have to keep a diary or journal. In the case of exercise and weight control, for example, you can take advantage of online recording programs that also give you tips that adapt to your record of progress. There are certainly "apps for that" which can make your record-keeping easy and perhaps reinforcing in their own right.
5. request extra support if your habits area unit proving more durable to vary

One of the best ways to build your inner resilience is by looking outward for support. If you're having trouble making these changes on your own, reach out to your friends, family, or perhaps your supervisors, teachers, or mentors. Group exercise programs may also be more motivating than going it on your own.

How Positive Thinking Builds Your Skills, Boosts Your Health

·       introduction
Positive thinking sounds useful on the surface. (Most people would like to be positive instead of negative.) But, “positive thinking” is additionally a soft and downy term that's simple to dismiss. In the world, it seldom carries a similar weight as words like “work ethic” or “persistence.”
·       How Positive Thinking Builds Your Skill Set
The benefits of positive thoughts do not stop when a couple of minutes of fine feelings subside. In fact, the most important profit that positive thoughts give is associate increased ability to make skills and develop resources to be used later in life.
Let's consider a real-world example.
A child UN agency runs around outside, swinging on branches and fidgeting with friends, develops the ability to move athletically (physical skills), the ability to play with others and communicate with a team (social skills), and therefore the ability to explore and examine the globe around them (creative skills). In this method, the positive emotions of play and joy prompt the kid to make skills that a helpful and valuable in lifestyle.
These skills last for much longer than the emotions that initiated them. Years later, that foundation of athletic movement may become a scholarship as a school contestant or the communication skills might blossom into employment provide as a business manager. The happiness that promoted the exploration and creation of latest skills has long ago concluded, however the talents themselves survive.
Fredrickson refers to the current because the “broaden and build” theory as a result of positive emotions broaden your sense of prospects and open your mind, that successively permits you to make new skills and resources that may give worth in different areas of your life.
As we tend to mentioned earlier, negative emotions do the other. Why? Because building skills for future use is irrelevant once there's immediate threat or danger (like the tiger on the path).
All of this analysis begs the foremost necessary question of all: if positive thinking is thus helpful for developing valuable skills and appreciating the massive image of life, how do you actually get yourself to be positive?
·       How to Increase Positive Thinking in Your Life
What you'll do to extend positive thoughts and cash in of the “broaden and build” theory in your life?
Well, something that sparks feelings of joy, happiness, and love can do the trick. You probably recognize what things work well for you. Maybe it's playing the guitar. Maybe it's spending time with a certain person. Maybe it's carving tiny wooden lawn gnomes.
That said, here are three ideas for you to consider…
1. Meditation — Recent analysis by Fredrickson and her colleagues has disclosed that individuals World Health Organization meditate daily show a lot of positive emotions than those that don't. As expected, people that meditated conjointly designed valuable long–term skills. For example, 3 months once the experiment was over, the people that meditated daily continued to show increased heedfulness, purpose in life, social support, and decreased illness symptoms.
Note: If you're looking for an easy way to start meditation, here is a 10–minute guided meditation that was recently sent to me. Just close your eyes, breathe, and follow along.
2. Writing — this study, revealed within the Journal of analysis in temperament, examined a gaggle of ninety undergrad students UN agency were split into 2 teams. The first cluster wrote concerning associate intensely positive expertise every day for 3 consecutive days. The second group wrote about a control topic.
Three months later, the scholars UN agency wrote concerning positive experiences had higher mood levels, fewer visits to the health center, and experienced fewer illnesses. (This blew me away. Better health when simply 3 days of writing concerning positive things!)
Note: I want to be terribly erratic with my writing, but now I publish a new article every Monday and Thursday. I've written concerning my writing method and the way you'll stick with any goal during a a lot of consistent manner within the articles here, here and here.
3. Play — schedule time to play into your life. We schedule conferences, conference calls, weekly events, and other responsibilities into our daily calendars … why not schedule time to play?
When was the last time you blocked out associate degree hour on your calendar simply to explore and experiment? When was the last time you intentionally carved out time to have fun? You can't tell Maine that being happy is a smaller amount necessary than your weekday meeting, and yet, we tend to act am fond of it is as a result of we tend to ne'er provides it a time and space to live on our calendars.
Give yourself permission to smile and revel in the advantages of positive feeling. Schedule time for play and journey so you'll expertise happiness and joy, and explore and build new skills.
Note: for a lot of ideas on the importance of play, scan this text on however one man cured his anxiety.
Happiness vs. Success (Which Comes First?)

There's no doubt that happiness is that the results of action. Winning a championship, landing a better job, finding someone you love — these things will bring joy and contentment to your life. But thus typically, we tend to incorrectly assume that this suggests happiness invariably follows success.

How to Overcome Boredom

·        Have you ever been bored?
Restless? Fidgety? In need of some inspiration?
I have a theory on boredom. I believe that the speed of tedium has increased  aboard the pace of technology.
If you think about it, technology has provided us with mobile phones, lap tops, i-pads, device after device – all to ultimately fix one problem:
Ø Boredom
We have become a global nation that feeds on entertainment.
We associate ‘living’ with ‘doing’. People don’t know how to sit still. We feel guilty if we are not ‘doing.’ ‘Inactivity’ has become the ultimate ‘sin’.
Ø What is boredom anyway?
You might not realize it, but boredom stimulates a form of anxiety & stress. It evokes an emotional state that creates frustration and feeds procrastination.
It’s a desire to be ‘doing something’ or to be ‘entertained’. It’s a desire for sensory stimulation.
Ø What it boils down to a lack of focus.
If you think about those times when you’re bored it’s usually because you ‘don’t know what to do’. So indecision plays a big part.
When we are focused on what’s important to us and what we want to achieve, it’s pretty hard to be bored.
So one answer to tedium is to become targeted on what you wish.
Sometimes it’s good to be bored
If ennui could be a want for sensory stimulation – then what’s the other of that? To be content with no stimulation.
Ø In other words, to enjoy stillness.
Research has shown that it’s not the ‘boredom’ its-self that causes the frustration, it’s the resistance to doing nothing. Think about it. What would happen if you were to ‘let go’ of the desire to be entertained? You wouldn’t be bored anymore. You would be relaxing!
In my expertise, it’s often the most obvious, simplistic solutions that are the most powerful in life. So when you’re bored, the easiest way to combat this is to enjoy it.
Sounds weird, but think of ‘boredom’ as a form of ‘relaxation’. It’s an opportunity from the constant stimulation that twenty first century living provides. The constant TVs, mobile phones, radios, internet, emails, phone calls…
Ø Who knows, perhaps ‘boredom’ is truly a decent for us?
Next time you’re ‘feeling bored’ rather than feeding the frustration by frantically trying to find one thing to try and do, maybe you can sit back, relax and savor the feeling of having nothing to do.
Here’s my 3 step strategy to overcome boredom:
1. Get focused
Instead of chasing sensory stimulation at random, focus on what’s really important to you. What would make good use of your time? What may you be doing that might contribute to your major goals in life?
Here are a few ideas:
Spend some time in quiet contemplation considering what’s important to you
Start that artistic project you’ve been talking concerning for the previous couple of weeks
Brainstorm: consider some concepts for brand new innovative product or businesses
2. Kill procrastination
Boredom is useful in some ways because it gives us energy to ‘do things’, so next time you’re bored why not put this good energy to use by ticking off those things that you have been ‘meaning to get done, but have been too busy’.
This is a great time to clear your ‘to do’ list.
Some ideas:
Do some exercise
Read a book
Learn something new
Call a friend
Get creative (draw, paint, sculpt, create music, write)
Spring clean
Wash the car
Renovate the house
Re-arrange the furniture
Write your shopping list
Water the plants
Walk the dog
Sort out your mail & email
De-clutter (clear out that wardrobe)
3. Enjoy boredom
If none of the on top of work, then try a different approach. Don’t surrender to tedium and instead prefer to relish it.
Contrary to well-liked belief, we tend to don’t got to be perpetually ‘doing things’ so as to be productive. In-fact analysis has shown that individuals square measure additional productive after they take periods of rest to recharge.

So take some time to relax. You never know you might even like it.
